1997 VR6 dies when AC turned on

1997 VR6 dies when AC turned on
I have a 1997 VR6. Lately, when I turn the AC on the car dies. If I start the car with the AC already on, it runs for a few seconds and cut out when the compressor kicks in. I recently replaced a dead battery...might be relevant. Any ideas?
