Default 96 jetta tranny problems

I recently jacked up my car on jackstands and I was running the car 1st through fifth and when I put it in reverse the passenger wheel alone spins and the transmission makes a loud grinding sound, while the driver side wheel stays stationary... I never noticed it when the car was on the ground hmmm any ideas what this could be???
