Default 96 Jetta tranny slip

1996 Jetta 2.0 Auto 102,000 miles

How in the $@%# do you check the transmission fluid[:@]!?

The transmission slips going into 3rd gear, and slips when downshifting from 4th to 3rd.
Im hoping that I can fix this problem by simply replacing the tranny filter and fluid. I have
done this with cars in the past, but those cars where Buicks and Fords... These Jettas are
so quirky, Im not sure what to think, so Im looking for some advice.

I find it hard to beleive that a well maintained Volkswagon with 102,000 miles
has a transmission that is nearing death.

Thanks for your help.

Jay
