Default POS Automatic tranny problems

I have a 1992 vw passat with an automatic pos transmission. I have been having a problem with the car shifting into overdrive or 4th gear ever since I have owned the car. I have changed some sensors but it still jolts when it goes into 4th gear. Now recently, the car will not shift out of 1st gear or it gets perminately stuck in 3rd gear. Like it is in limp home mode which is what they call it. This will happen until I mess around with the wires on top of the transmission. I really don't know why this helps it but it does. I belive that this is just an electrical problem with the car but I am not sure. So if you have any suggestions on what to do, please let me know!!!! Thank you.

well i work with transmissions and i have realized that those transmissions have had problems with the wire harness in the valve body witch is actually a ribbon but that may be the problem.

yeah this must be the worst tranny ever built!! Any suggestions on how to fix that?? I don't repair trannys like that, I can fix anything else on the car, but have never worked on a automatic like that.. Word of advice to everyone, do not buy 1990-97 passat with an automatic transmission!!! If you can tell me how or where to get that fixed and maybe a estimate, that would be great. Thanks

i own a 93 passat and i was having the same problem. my mechanic was able to find a shot in one of the wires that you where talking about above the traie. he said it was one of the wires that led to the motion censer, and because of the short the car didn't know how fast it was going so it didn't shift. if you are interested i can give you name and number of the mechanic that did the work.
