Eventually got Polo back from dealer 3 weeks since being towed in. told me that the problem was the butterfly flap was seriously dirty (something to do with throttle body). I've been advised to only use super unleaded as the car is TSi and should be using that. This, according to the mechanic/technician is 99% certain to cure the problem of the car cutting out. We will see......
