Default Timing Belt

A friend bought a 2001 Passat about four months ago from a used car dealer. The car had 98,000 miles on it. Two weeks ago the engine died and the car had to be towed. It was discovered that the timing belt broke or slipped or something. It totally ruined the engine. Itwas the original timing belt.My friend did not have a warranty on the car. Does anyone know the recommended replacement mileage for the timing belt? I was told 90,000 miles. Since the dealer sold the car with the mileage past the recommended timing belt change mileage, shouldn't this dealer be responsible for replacing the engine? I'd appreciate any help.

I am very new to the VW world. Just got a 99 last week. If he has the 1.8T the TB should be done every 60,000 miles. If you don't mind me asking what is it going to run for a new engine?

Hello there. The quote the dealer gave him was $6,500. Of course that's the dealer so I'm sure it's top dollar. I've heard lots of people with problems with VW's. Good luck with yours.

I think if the belt has over 60,000 miles, the TB should be replaced with in 5,000 miles. But it is always good to open the front cover of the TB and take a look at the belt first. You can tell by your eye if it is really bad.

I have an '01 VW Passatt 1.6L Turbo, and last week the dealer said that the recomended timing belt replacement is between 70-100k. My father built them for many years and so most are rated for 100-120k, but if VW is telling me 100k, then I would spend the 1800 to replace it before your engine needs to be rebuilt. Hope this helps.
