Default Fuel Pump/filter issue

Hey thanks in advance for your replies. I have a 2004 passat 1.8t with 91k miles. I was just driving today and stopped at a red light and my car just konked out. Sounded like it was out of gas but I had over a quarter tank. I am guessing it is a fuel pump or filter issue because it will start for a second but then just stops like it out of gas. I brought it to a local auto shop and he said without actually looking at it that it has to be the pump and there is no way it could only be the filter. Keep in mind that I have let it get really low before refueling (0-10 miles left on the display) quite often. I have been told doing that will get the filter quite dirty and can cause the car to be unable to use the fuel but the mechanic is telling me I need a whole new pump and everything. I am in college and am just trying to save some cash so if anyone with some knowledge could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

I'm looking for answers along the same lines. However, in my experience of working on vehicles for the last 19 years (not hardcore, just the basics) I have learned when you change a part out that has other components such as filters, wires, fuses, etc., you should always change those components with the main part. So, with that said, I suggest (if you believe it could really just be the filter) try changing the filter out first and if that doesn't help you then go on to the pump. Keep in mind, though, that the fuel pump component of this vehicle also has a fuse, relays and wires. which could also be causing issues. The filter is fairly easy to access, too. There's a door, in the trunk on the right side, that provides access directly to the fuel pump.

hope this helps :-)
