'00 Passat ABS/BRAKE failure

ABS light
My ABS light has come on intermittently. It sounds like it is most likely a dead ABS unit, but it could be other things (such as a wheel sensor).
Would hooking up the car to a diagnostic computer pinpoint the problem? I could do this, or just remove the ABS unit and have it rebuilt. If the computer can't identify the exact problem, then it probably makes more sense to just send in the ABS unit for $150.
Anyone know?
Thanks.

They will look at it for free and determine if it's faulty. It's cheaper to just pull it and have them determine if it's broken than to pay the money to have the codes read by the dealer.

this is a major problem with VW/Audi from that time period
I have a Audi A6 that had the same problem. My brakes actually locked in place while driving. The whole module plus repairing damage to my rotors/new pads cost me over $1500 with labor. I had problems with the brakes even after my new module was in place and had to have it re-coded to fix it. Luckily it was covered under the warranty on the new unit
