Default quick question someone with any advice please help

ok first off hi everyone this is my first post. k now i have a 1996 jetta 2.0 5 speed. tonight i took off the lower control arms off to press in the new bushings in the rear of the control arm and i now have two questions. does the bushing that is like a barrell on the front of the lower control arm press in and out? k now the next question is my biggest worry. with the control arms off i grab and push up on the strut and it moves up and there is like a 1/2 inch gap on the engine bay side of the tower between the tower and the rubber part and when i let go then the rubber sits flush on the tower. both sides are the same but to me it shouldnt do that. now my question is do i just take that nut off on the top and drop the strut down and its just a bottom bushing and a top bushing that sandwich the tower? im sure im not that lucky. i just hope the spring doesnt need to come off the strut. any advice will be much appreciated.
thanks
jesse

the strut tops have some play in them the newer ones are allways loose i wouldnt be worried and you would need a spring compressor
the bushing on the controle arm can be pressed but its a real pain

hey thank you very much for the reply jrailer. just looked kinda odd to me so i thought i would ask. do you happen to know how to program the key fobs to the car to lock and unlock the doors? i got the car a few months ago and there were like 4 fobs in the center console but none do anything. thanks again for your help.
thanks
