Default Geting Cold Feet about a car I'm looking at

Hello.

I am looking at a 2000 Jetta TDI, 5-speed with about 166,000 miles on it. It looks to be in very good shape but I keep hearing horrible things about reliabillity of VW products. Is there any thing that I should look for or would want to know about these cars before I buy it? Is the TDI noticably better on fuel or down on power as opposed to the standard engine in the real world? I know that there are a lot of dedicated VW entusiasts and with a car that old, I thought that it was best to turn to the enthusiast comunity for advice. This is to be my daily driver, not a project car, race car or toy. Would YOU buy this car?

Thanks guys,

Ken

I don't know much about diesels but the fuel mileage is pretty good and the engine is supposed to be reliable. The engine has 90hp but, it has 155 ft-lbs of torque.
