Default 99.5 Jetta alarm problem

I know there have some previous threads about this but not for our year. 99.5 Jetta has an alarm problem with it going off sometimes for apparently no reason.

Some background: daughter lost her flip-key and got a valet key about 4 months ago. Dealership said it did NOT have to be programmed. All of a sudden alarm will go off when she opens door or starts car... but not always. Looked for the alarm control module but could not find it and think that it is in the comfort control module?

Because there is no remote, can't open trunk to shut off alarm.

I guess the question is: is the alarm module in the CCM and is there anything to look for before trying to replace whole unit? If we buy a replacement flip key or remote ($199)... would that help?

Driving us (me) nuts.
