Default 97 jetta gt tranny/speedo/heat problem

My jetta recently started shifting up (I assume) or goes limp (no power) when the temp sensor reads 90 at this time the speedo also goes wild and jumps around. When I crank the heat the problem goes away as the temp sensor reading drops from 90.
No issues when cold or under 90 degrees. Need help desperately as I drive 160k a day for work and can't afford a new car.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

There's no check engine light and the guy I had try his scanner came up with nothing? I know it's an odd problem.
