Default 97 Jetta Auto Transmission Issue, Help!!

Yes I'm a new guy, I have had several vws and probably should have joined ages ago.... anyhow.

Got a 97 jetta 2.0 with 90k on it, great shape, "needs tranny work"??
I changed the fluid, filter and pan gasket but still same issue.

When its cold it has reverse only.
Once its warm (15 - 20 minutes) I have everthing.
However,
1st gear slips, at an idle it wont even hold the car. Its almost like driving a manual.
1st to 2nd slips, Then thats it.
Its fine, as if nothing is wrong. Once I'm in 3rd Im allset. No issues.

I see others talking about the TCM
The unit located under the seat, Is that really the TCM ?
Looks like the same size as the engine or cars computer ....

Any one have any ideas?

I only bought the auto cause its for my Mother.
She needs a car, her and my dad were in a hit and run, and the other guy speed off and the car they had was wrecked so I'm trina help them out.
So, If anyone could help I would appreciate it so much !!

I dont wanna go to the dealer
((They charged me 90 bucks for the oil change on my MKV))
90 bucks!

My others are 5speed - Thank God!
((except my Linc Navigator, but that would be sweet in a 5 speed !))

I know these cars pretty well, but its the 1st one ever with a auto and I'm lost.......
Thanks!

Try a bottle of Lucas Oil anti-slip. If that doesn't work then you need a new torque converter.

Just did the line pressure mod and got 1st and 2nd back!!
I did a full fluid swap too. changes to castrol European and a bottle of Lucas.
The shift is nice and firm, went from a slipping tranny to tons of power.
I know the mod is not the best way to go, but if the tranny is on its way out and you have nothing to lose, do it!
I have herd of cases were they have gone another 50k or 3 - 4 years plus.

(it wasnt due to just a fluid change, I had tried that already)

The mod consist of making sure the valve caps are tight on the vavle body and an adjustment of the line pressure screw on the valve body.
Its a t20 torx bit. I have a few extra drivers and bent one to fit in there.
Actually found the mod on this forum a couple years back....
Thank God!
I will update as I add miles to the car.......
