Default '96 Jetta:Headlights failure(low lights) fuses not blown..

HELP!!
Low lights worked before I went into the store- 30 min later when I started the
car- both normal driving lights failed to turn on. Highlights still work.
A mechanic friend had only enough time to check the fuses- informed me that
there is seperate fuses for each side- and that both fuses were fine.

So... Now what??

Please respond ASAP as I'm blinding everyone when I drive at night!!!

And I'm worried the highlights will suddenly die as well.

Thank you!!!!

I live in Hawaii- warm weather- hasn't over heated since I got it used- 4 months ago.
however- I had a problem a week earlier starting it after splashing just a little bit of water
on the engine when I was topping off the radi. resvr. Had to let it dry out for about 2 hours. When it did start- a big cloud of white smoke came out of the tail pipe.

I figure if it was somehow a delayed short in the headlight wiring- it would have tripped the fuses right? and effected more than just the low lights...?

ALSO>>>>
[ul][*]ChkEng light has been on since I bought it- the previous owner covered it with black tape.[*]Occasionally.. when you unlock the doors from the drivers side- one or all the windows go down part way.
[/ul][ul][*]The friend who found the car for me reccomended that I do a heater bypass to prevent the motor from blowing...Is this a known problem for this car? I have the parts.. I just hate to loose the ability to heat the car if I don't have to...[/ul]
thank you

Default Did you get this problem solved?

What was the solution? I just ran into teh same thing on my 2001 Jetta TDI: The low-beam lights don't work. The high beams and marker lights work fine, and all the fuses are good. This just started, and the low-beam headlights wer fine until I tried to use them tonight.

Thanks.

Your bulbs need to be replaced.

Default Sure enough... bulbs were bad

You were correct. After pulling out and gutting the 173 relay (to try and bypass the DRL circuit), I still had no lights. In desperation, I finally checked the bulbs and BAM, I felt like an idiot when I saw both low-beam filaments burned through.

At that moment my head actually turned into a donkey head like in the Looney Tunes cartoons. I brayed loudly, fell 300 feet off a cliff, and landed next to a plate of ACME bird-seed. Then I got new bulbs and all is well.

At least I don't have Daytime Running Lights anymore. And all it cost me was a day of f*#&ing around with my car showing off my crappy troubleshooting skills. They had both failed at once, and I assumed the chances of simultaneous bulb-failure were negligible. Stupid me.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

It is strange they blew out at the same time. It seems like such a surge of power would blow a fuse.

So, both beams blow out?
I check relays, fuses, you think may be the switch?
