Default 94 Jetta, ignition felt sticky, then absolute no start.

Hey everyone!
I'm new to this site, and new to my Jetta too. Just got a '94 Jetta III 5 spd., and have encountered my first problem.

This morning, the ignition felt....sticky....when turning the engine OFF. I felt resistance in the key as I shut it off.
Thought, "Hm. That was odd."
Got back in it, and it started fine.
Later in the day: It did it again, so I turned the key to re-start....to see if it did it again. It didn't. But it also wouldn't turn the engine over.
A complete no start. The lights in the dash turned on though.......so I had electrical power....
So I had a dude push me and I kick started it so me and my daughter could get home!!
Did I break something by forcing the key when I felt that resisitance??

I'm thinking: Ignition switch....and maybe that's why my dash works off and on too? I know a lot of the electrical could be effected by a faulty igniton switch....and I have a lot of electrical quirks in my dash. Sometimes the speedometer and tach work, sometimes not. Sometimes I can GET them to work by engaging the e-brake, but that's not really practical when trying to see my speed on the freeway. Strange.
Could my ignition problem be the ignition lock cylinder? I'll try my spare key when my husband brings it home....just in case.
Maybe it's BOTH the lock cylinder AND the switch? Argh.

Please help! I just need some insight on this, I'm new to the VW.....we just gotfamiliarwith our Volvo, and then I go and get a VW that needs tlc!
I'd appreciate any help you can offer, thanks!
