I need to know everything there is to know about changing my broken timing belt any info would be greatly appreciated . Is there any special tools ? do i have to buy a new head or have it redone please help thanks Again

 

V-6, 1.8T, diesel, etc..?? I am in the process of doing this on my 1.8T 2002 Jetta and if you don't have the tooling or know how it could get interesting. I have access to a complete speed shop and it was still a pain in the A$$. You'll need a special Torx for the cylinder head bolts (ha, I actually used a 8mm allen socket, it's not the correct socket but fit real well). You'll have to make a tool from a metric allen wrench for the tensioner. You'll need a spring compressor (we used a seat and guide machine at my oldman's shop which worked bitchen) and make some pieces out of aluminum that are the same diameter of the exhaust spring and hollow out the center and make a groove approximately 1/4" or so from top to bottom to remove the valve springs. You'll have to make a tool similar for the intakes since they are smaller. Snap on actually has a valve spring removal tool that you can purchase for this application but I didn't want to spend 150 bucks for a one time use deal. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but that's what I've had to do thus far...

First and most important ...Did the belt break wile driving or eng running?? if it did than you bent some valves .. i just did my sons 1.8 passatt and it was a good weekend job and about $750 for head work and parts ..The easyest way to this if your jetta looks like a passatt ? unbolt core support and tip foward for easy acces to front of engine , you will need a 17-18 mm 12point , a 10-12-14mm , some torx sockets and other varous common tools ..let me know ill walk you through it..and if you just need a belt change you dont need any head tools?

 

Actually he asked if he needed a new head or could he have it redone and so I told him what we had to do to get the head removed and repaired if he was to do it himself.. Now whether or not he has plans to do this I don't know. If the vehicle was running and he tossed a timing belt there's probably a 99% chance he will have to remove and repair the cylinder head like I described above. I'm currently doing this on a 2002 1.8 Jetta.
