Default 1996 jetta trek

Just bought this car a month ago. Starts and runs smooth in warm weather,

What its been doing is now that it is cold it doesn't start until I release the key after cranking and it takes a few times, now it doesn't start but will pop after I release the key, some times sputter once or twice without starting, turns over smooth.

I tried a new ignition coil with no luck, I am stuck somewhere with no tools, so I might have to tow it home.

Any ideas??
Thanks.
