Default 1995 2.0 jetta hard to start once started engine smothers

My son has a 1995 2.0 jetta that we have had for over 10 years. I have always done the work on it sometimes using this forum for info into past problems. I have ran into a problem in which I can not solve.

Every morning the car will turn over and try to start and sputter. You can turn the key forever as many times as you want and it will try to start but won't. You can smell and tell it acts like its flooded. If you let it sit for 5 or 10 min it will start immediatly but when you start to go and give it gas it wants to smother. If you can keep it at about 3000 rpms it will run ok. If you get under that it smothers. After about 10 mins of this it clears out and runs great til the next morning and this starts all over again.

There are no check engine light. I've changed plugs wires dist, etc. but no help. I'm not sure to start with the coil or the o2 sensor or the maf sensor. Any and all help would be apprecieted. I would like to fix the problem so I can get my vehicle back.
