I have read up on this and found many to have the same issue, but no one finding a specific answer. This problem is with my 2.0 gas, 1999, 5 speed jetta with 130k. At 70 mph or more the shimmy starts & gets worse the faster you go, but, let off the gas & its smooth as silk. I figured it was one of the cv joints, so I took them all off, replaced one outer boot, cleaned them up, every thing looked great, re-greased, didn't remove the shimmy. Tried a different set of tires off my TDI, still the same, so, its not tire balancing issue. One of the posts I read talked about motor mounts & engine alignment getting screwed up after a timing belt change? This car has had the belt changed, but, I didn't think you had to do anything with the engine mounts to do that? Anyway. . .very frustrating. ..hoping someone on here has had the same issue & can share the fix. . .thanks.

 

FYI. . .I had re-packed 3 of the 4 cv joints. . .the outside passenger I didn't do as the boot showed no signs of leaking grease. Out of pure frustration and the process of elimination I tore the one back apart & simply re-greased. . .walla. . .fixed it. Smooth as silk now. A little tip I can pass on to you. . .go buy a needle grease zerk fitting. . .it is a needle about 2 inches long. You can turn the joint on an angle, get the needle deep into the joint and pump grease until you start to see it pushing out past the ball bearings. . .then rotate and repeat all the way around. . .saves allot of time and a big mess. . .
