Default Golf wiper problems

Hi,

My 2000 Golf GLS is having wiper problems. When I turn on my car, the wipers move maybe half an inch, after that they stop. If I try to turn them on, they will move again half an inch and stop. I've checked the fuse, and everything seems to be fine there. I'm either thinking its the wiper motor or the transmission? I really dont know, could someone give me some insight please,

thank you,

Phil

ok. heres how to tell. make sure the engine is off. turn the key forward untill just before it starts. turn on the wipers. if u hear a buzzing the motor is working. thusly meaning its likely the wiper tranny. i would check all of the connectors and bushings. hope this helps.

yea and if you dont wanna rebuild it, grab a motor out of a junk yard. i got one fro 20 bucks that way. good luck guys. (and heck, if you're having such issues now is the time to do a single wiper conversion!)

I think the first thing you should check would be the nut attaching the motor to the wiper arms . I have had mine come loose just enough so the wipers would react just as yours are.

I have a similar problem. I have a 97 golf 1.6 and about a month ago there was a little bit of smoke coming from the steering column when I turned the key. Now the smoke is gone but the wipers don't work. It's def. not the fuse and I haven't checked whether or not its the wiper motor. I remember having a problem with my mustang's bright lights where the contacts were too hot and melted the plastic, therefore shifting the contacts out of place. I was looking to take the steering column apart and check for the same in this case, but I'm not sure if I need to do anything specific so that the airbag doesn't accidentally deploy. Does anyone have a clue what I can do to try and fix this or if this is actually simple and I'm just overlooking something?

Thanks
Nik
