Default Air conditioning

I have a 94 Golf GL. My air conditioning does not want to stay on. The compressor sounds like it kicks in, then turns off a half second later, and continues to do this every ten seconds. I replaced the contols because thats what a mechanic told me was wrong with it. He said that the compressor was not getting enough power from the control unit and that is why it turned off. When I replaced the control, it work for a bit, then the temp controls seemed to get hot and continued doing the same thing it was doing before I replaced it. I need help. Has anyone had a similar problem and if so, what do I do?

Thanks. I think it's time to find a new mechanic. Mine told me it was full. I hate not having a good mechanic. I moved to MD from NY and the one thing I really miss is my mechanic. Just curious...did you have a similar problem?
