Default New VW Buyer

Hey all,

I just purchased a 2000 VW Passat Wagon. Its awesome! Fully loaded and certainly different from the typical Japanese cars I use to drive.

Anyways so there are a couple things I know I will need to fix.

One of them is getting the back brakes replaced. It sounds like there is some metal on metal action going on. Anyone know how much that job can run?

Additionally I need to get an emission test done. What seem to be the most common reasons the VA Passat may fail an emissions test?

What sorts of maintenance should I do to make sure my car runs for as long as possible?

Lastly, what procedures are most of you able to do to your VW when trying to save money?
