first off hi all, i have done it now .i have just sold a 52 plate wrx to buy a 72 1200 beetle , yeah crazy it sounds . but , with a lot of consideration i.e my wife biting my ears whispering vw beetle at everything i say is the deciding factor . so i bought the beetle we have had her for a day. sometimes she'll start on the key and most other times she won't . i can hear the relay at the front clicking and a clicking at the rear but she just wont turn . i have tried rocking the car but still no joy. this poses a few questions having never owned a beetle before . if any ons can help i would be very grateful.....

1. where is the starter located . ?
2. has anybody had this before ?
the battery is showing 12.5 volts all the lights are bright but she just refuses to turn over . just click , click .
please help im already havin second thoughts ... cheers jamie...

 

you might wqant to cheack your belt and bottom pully for wear.

 

Confusing ???? 1972 wasn't a 1200....1962 was a1200
However, if this is a VW beetle the starter will be under the car
on the passenger side bolted to the tranny just over the right axle.
Disconnect the battery, remove the wires off the starter and remove the top engine bolt right side of car, the nut is17mm and
the bolt holds the engine to the tranny and is also the top bolt for
the starter. Then remove the lower starter nut 17mm also, remove
the starter, Remove the little end cap and shims DONT LOOSE
THESE, remove the end cap to expose the starter brushes, clean
the brushes and armiture with wd-40and be sure the brushes are
free to touch the armiture, replace all the goodies, What happens
is the starter will get moisture inside and cause the brushes to
stick and then the starter wont work most of the time.
