98 2.0 Jetta Cold Starting Problems
My 98 has about 130K on it. It has received expected maintenance in ignition system, oil changes etc. It has developed a problem starting below about 45F. This is becoming a challenge as the car is my only transportation. The odd thing is that after spitting and sputter for a bit it just evens out to a steady idle. This takes longer and is harder to accomplish the colder it gets. I am guessing this indicates that once some misses and hits in the cylinders generate some heat the problem subsides. Mechanics seem baffled. It seems to me that it must be a switch or valve or something of the like sticking. Anyone ever get this? What did you do about it?
