Default Water Pump and Timing Belt

I recently got STRANDED by the side of the road whenthe water pump bearing on my 2000 Passat Wagon GLS (70,000 miles) died and caused massive overheating. Repair job (including a new timing belt) and complete coolant system flush was $1,250.00.

I regularly have this car serviced at my local VW dealer. Is it unreasonable to expect that they could have caught this potential problem? I'm totally peeved that this happened and I think the 10K and 20K service they're providing is a bunch of you-know-what.
