Default 97 glx headlight problem

My friend is having problems with his headlights not working. He replaced bulbs, and checked fuses.
He told me they come on with the ignition key off but when he goes to start the car they go out and never come back on. I'm thinking possibly ignition switch, any help would be appriciated.

Well its a matter of doing some ciruit testing.

Ideally you need VAG-COM\VCDS but a multimeter will do if you have a wiring diagram.

There are very few cars are equipped with HID lamp reflector headlight design, they take D2R bulbs. Common HID bulb projector lamp D2S. This is a hacker uses, the basis of the H1. It has been completely wrong optical normal reflector headlamps, and cause serious glare.
