Default Question from Old Guy

I have a 2006 VW Jetta TDI - I recently had the dealer change the timing belt (180,000 miles). About 3,000 miles later the EGR valve went out (cracked). After replacing it, the dealer told me that the pinging sound is
still there and they would have to replace the lifter guides. I am concerned
that they may be taking advantage of me....any thoughts please?
