My Jetta Maintenance costs are ridiculous

RE: My Jetta Maintenance costs are ridiculous
Last time I went to the dealership, my final invoice was almost $3k just to have an engine coil replaced.
Before that, it was almost $1k for a brake service.
I can't do my own work because I live in an apt complex and don't have a garage, also don't know anyone with a garage.
I sympathize.. haven't gone to the dealership since. I've been trying out different shops in the area. It's hard to find someone who isn't going to try to squeeze the most out of you if they can in this economy.
Any referrals for Ventura County?

I agree. I bought a 2007 Jetta 5 Months ago and was surprised about the service cost. Luckily I bought an additional 4 year warranty which will cut the cost down to $60 but I agree to start doing your own service when warranty expires.
