I purchased my 2003 1.8t Jetta just this past year. It only came with one key, and the other day I was at the gym and someone stole my key. Had the car towed home, and called the dealership (50 miles away). They said they HAD to have the car in order to make a new key?

To my understanding the only thing they NEED is the ECU to reprogram the PATS system. Can't I just remove the ECU and take it to them, I'm sure they have a way to plug into it and supply power to re-flash it.


Any help would be great to avoid a $500 tow bill plus the $500 it will take to re-program this car.[:@]

 

when i asked my shop about getting another key (my car only came with 1 key) they said it is specific by the VIN # but never said anything about needing the car there for a key to be made. check out streetkeys.com which you can get cheaper versions as well. good luck!

 

Thanks that site sells a blank key that you have to take to the dealership to have it cut and programmed.

So I would still have to tow the car, does anyone know if I can ship the ECU to VW????
