Default Cv joint?

Hey everybody. This is my first post but have a few questions. My GF has a 2004 jetta 1.8 turbo 39,000 miles on it and when we were driving home tonight when she took off from a stoplight we heard/felt a thump then a grinding/growling noise. sounded to me like it was coming from the front end and when we tried to drive it again since we were only a couple blockes from home when this happened is made a faint growling noise from the front right side. I drove it back and forath in the driveway and didn't hear the noise. but when I would hold the brakes and stall it a little then let off and drive backwards or forward made the grind/growl noise again for a few feet. I'm wondering if this is a cv joint or something else. I'm a heavy equipment mechanic so I'm not real familiar with small stuff but this was my first thought. any help would be greatly be apprieciated. thanks Lee

CV joints generally make noise when you turn left or right, then they'll click really bad. Sounds like the piston in the calipers isn't retracting like it should leaving the pads on the rotors.
