Looking at a '94 Jetta 2.0 for a first car
Hey there guys, this is my first post here, and I'm writing about a 1994 Jetta I might be buying from a friend. The car has a 2.0 litre engine, it's 4 door and a 5-speed. It needs a little work, mostly cosmetic, but it runs and drives for $200. This would be my first car ever, I'm 16 and getting a liscense soon.
What do you think of this car? What are the known issues? Thanks for any and all input.

A "friend" is selling you a car for $200?? My friends were never that generous, if they were they were no friends of mine. Hey seriously if the car runs and gets from A to B, with no problems, you can't complain. My first car was a '93 shadow lowered with gold spoke daitens..lol. O WOW!

also if its a manual and the starter goes out dont push start itmore than a couple times, when i did it in my 2.0 the pinion gear on the starter broke apart, a chunk hit the fly wheel and shot through my tranny. it would have been hella expensive if i couldnt aluminum weld. but i still had to pull the tranny which sucks

I looked at the car today. It's real solid and has almost no rust. The battery is shot from sitting around for months, jumping it didn't work. We are bringing a working battery over on the weekend and if all goes well, I'll buy it. It needs rotors so I might get it for more like $100, the guy has a ton of vehicles in and out and doesn't exactly need the money..... I'm confident on the purchase though. It's still a beater as it has 177K miles, but I actually saw it start up and drive a few months back. BTW, it's a 1995. Thanks for the help guys, expect some pictures at some point too

Damn i wish i would have got mine for that damn cheap!!!! LOL good find. I love my 95 so far. My first car was an 87 trans am with flow master aspiration, and some kinda new fangled factor injection system suppose to match the camero cobra injection. I picked it up for 700 dollars cuz it had a bent tie-rod, and wheel well damage. I loved that car!

Bought the car a few days ago and brought it home. It runs and drives fine, just needs some TLC (plugs, fuel filter oil change etc.)
There's a thule luggage rack on it - I don't have a key for it and was wondering how to get it off? Also, I heard a noise while the car was running, and thought it might have contributed to the dead battery when I first looked at the car - do you think there's a draw on the battery? What are the possiblilites?
Thanks for the input as it's my first car.

You will only be using the power in the battery while the car is running if your Altenator is not working, but she wont stay running for long, cuz it will drain the 12 volt really fast. What kinda noise was it, cuz i have learned that the older VWs are kinda clanky, just make a few noises, but they arn't bad things.
