Default HELP! 2000 jetta runs rich/smokin brakes

I just bought a 2000 Jetta GLS 5 spd with a 2.0 today. I have some questions I hope somone can help me with.

Problem 1: It runs rich. It smells horrible, bad enough to burn your eyes and make your clothes smell. The MAF sensor was replaced due to a check engine light.

Problem 2: The left rear brake is hanging up. Under normal driving; no problem, but a spirited drive in the mountains reveal a smoking brake assy. I figure I just need to replace the caliper but I am looking for advice before I spend the $$

The rich running really bothers me. It seems to get worse the more you drive it.

Check your air filter. A really bad one will cause your engine to run rich.

Unfortunately it is a new air filter. I have a bad feeling that this is going to cost me a lot of money. I am not off to a good start with my re-intro with a VW.
