Cool groaning sound when drivers door opens

I have a 2007 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, I have heard that the sound the car makes when the drivers door is opened is the fuel pumping activating. My car makes that sound after it has sat for a while. But recently when I open the drivers door there is no sound anymore and my interior dome lights do not come on. The lights do come on when I open the other doors. Any thoughts from anybody on the issue could be. Thanks.

im not sure about VW but i work at a chevy dealer and its not uncommon for a door latch to fail and cause this problem. the mechanical part may work great but the internal circuts may be corroded and when you open the door the computer doesnt see the signal from the latch saying its open. you may also have a broken wire in the harness between the door and body. ive seen both instances.
