Default '99 Jetta GLS Alarm/Doorlock Issue

Just as an FYI, I don't have the switchblade key remote(s), only the valet key.

Whenever I go to lock the car doors, which can only be done on the driver's side when using a key, the doors will lock, but the alarm won't always go off. Sometimes the lights flash, but no horn and no flashing red light. Sometimes the alarm will arm properly, but it will take 5-10 tries to get it to disengage, even though the doors will unlock.

Any ideas?

this same thing happens to me, i lost my keys with the keyless entry thing on it, and sometimes when i lock my car, it will engage the alarm system (the horn will sound and red flashing light comes on) then when i go to unlock the car, the doors will unlock but the red flashing light will stay on meaning the alarm system is still engaged. then when i turn the key in the ignition the alarm goes off. i have sat outside my car locking and unlocking the doors to get the alarm off for 45 minutes one time.

that doesnt help you, but i think the only way to fix it is get the remote for keyless entry or take the fuse out for the alarm system which my friend did or something like that... he disabled the alarm is all i know.

for me, i close all the doors in my car when i get out, open the passenger door and hit the lock button, then close the passenger door and all the doors will be locked without the alarm system on... i live in a very rural area with low crime rate so i dont know if you want to leave your car without an alarm... but this locks all the doors and you dont have to fiddle with the door for 30 minutes. also, my car unlocks by turning the key to the left...make sure you know what way to turn the key to UNLOCK it so you dont lock it and turn the alarm on on accident.
sorry i dont know the real solution but maybe this will save some frustration

You seem to be right about the keyless entry being needed. I got a custom keyless entry installed (was cheaper than getting a new switchblade) and it seems to work fine.
