Default 97 Jetta 2.0 5spd What is the weak link?

I Want to know if anyone has an idea on what part in the transaxles of the jetta 2.0 5spd causes the reverse gear not to fully engage, thus causing the Gear to shear. I just put a rebuilt one in my 97 jetta and i am wondering what i can do to prevent this? Can somone lend a helping hand here?

Could it be the shifter isn't fully engaging reverse? I had some shifting weirdness in my '96 which I fixed by replacing the various bushings in the shifter linkages. You can get a kit with everything you need. The trick on the job is to secure the shifter into the neutral position so the gates line up correctly after it's reassembled.

I just finished replacing my 5 spd after losing reverse, I was told this is from low oil or someone not using it correctly, when I check the oil it It was down 1.5 qts. ( IT WILL NEVER BE DOWN AGAIN GOT MY SELF A 17mm )
