Default 96 jetta won't start after battery disconnect

96 Jetta gls. My son tried to install a new head unit (radio).

He disconnected the negative terminal of the battery to do the work.
Giot it all in but then he couldn't silence the anit theft alarm after he installed the new radio.
He called me at work - saying help.

I advised him to put the old radio back. i.e. store as it was.

Now the car won't start. It cranks but won't run.
i.e. like it has no spark or no fuel.

I read somewhere that the computer might have been wiped by disconecting the battery.
Soething about the intake settings for the fuel injection system are computer controlled.

Help please anyone?

Pat

No, prolly what happend was when he messed with the radio it shut off fuel, or like an anti-theft thing won't let you star tthe car. Un hook both battery cables, wait like 5 min, and then hook everythng back up. Switch the radios if you want, but make sure you got the theft codes so the alrams and what not won't go off again. Call the dealership to get the codes, they can help and give you the steps to reset the computer.

I did try disconnecting the battery. That is I disconnected both ends of the battery. Waited a while then reconnected. It cranks but won'tstart. He must have blown another fuse or fuseable link.

I'm going to check to see if I hear the fuel pump running.(fuel). Then pull a sparkplug and check for spark. (spark).
If I have both of those. Then I guess it's time to have it towed to the shop.

btw: What do I need to do to install the aftermarket radio? That is to disable the anti-theft system.
My son had the new radio all wired up andwhen he went to connect the battery - as soon as he connected the negative terminalit triggured the anti theft alarm.

Did he wire it wrong?
Is there some trick to wiring it ?

thanks, Pat
