95 Jetta III 2.0L Sputters / Won't Start
95 Jetta III 2.0L will run rough and sounds like it's miss-firing. Currently won't start (turns over and sputters). Sometimes when I try to start it, it runs fine. The next time I start it, goes back to sputtering. Got check engine light a few days ago with error codes 00515 - hall sensor short intermit, 00513 - Engine speed no signal, 00525 - O2 no sig intermit, 65535 - ecu deffective. Drove it home and the engine light did not come on. Tried replacing coil with no change. Ideas?
change the wires and see. idout it thoue it wouldent throw o2, andecu codes for that, it would just run bad. i think it is definetly a computer problum unforchanety idont know anyting about that but the ground wire seems like a good place to start
The guy I bought it from said to mist some water around the plug wires while it was running. If it arcs then the wire is bad. It started a few minutes ago and I sprayed the around the spark plugs with no arcing.
While it was running it shot out a couple ounces of water out the tail pipe. It ran for about a minute and then died. I started it again and tried to give it some gas and it immediately died. Could it be th O2 sensor? That was one of the errors codes. Could a bad idle leading to low power also cause the "bad ecu" error I got?

After monkeying about some more looking for worn wires and loose connectors I found this connector with two wires hanging off of it. It looks like a big tin can. I pulled off the connector and the engine ran for a couple minutes before it died this time. What is it?

I though that connector went to that canister thing but uppon closer inspection, the wires leads under the frame somewhere. I bypassed the break with no results. I pulled off the two spark plugs I can get too and they are a little sooty but look ok. Through the last several days now the engine light has never lit up.
