Default 89 jetta hard start when sitting over night

On my 89 jetta 1.8L 8v, has a very hard start when it sits over night. The best way I can describe it is like an old carb with no choke, or like a cold diesel with bad glow plugs. This morning it took about 5-10 min of cranking and flooring it to get it to catch enough that it wouldstart. If anyone has any help it would be great. I'm going to test the fuel pressure tonight/morning.

By the way what is my fuel pressure suspose to be for a digifant2 fuel system? I though it was something like 80psi, but a Hanes repair book says 36psi.

checked fuel pressure and is 36psi when idling, disconnected fuel reg vacuum line and went up to 44psi, hooked it back up and returned to 36psi. checked pressure leakage with engine off and dropped very fast. i think the spec is drop to 29psi in 10 min, this was like 1-2min to 29psi.
tried again with returnline pinched off and still dropped but a little slower.
any ideas?

try a temp sensor
the fuel pressure will drop on a digifant system nothing to stop it going back to the tank from the rail other than the regulator
pinch the in line and see if it holds might have a check valve on the pump going bad

tried pinching the return line, but it didn't seem to work. the wierd thing is the next morning it wasn't idling high like it usually does. do you know if that check valve can be bought sepearatly or is it a part of one of the pumps, if so which one?
