Default 2003 Jetta Overheating

Bought my kid a 2003 Jetta from a friend about 6 months ago.

It started leaking coolant and overheating a few months ago and I haven't had time to really look into it so it's been sitting.

What's happening is the temp light comes on due to low water. Then the temp will start to rise. It rises when idling. When I drive or simply rev engine the temp comes back to normal. At least for a few minutes until it leaks enough water out that it can't recover.

I've been busy and haven't even looked under vehicle to see where leak is coming from but my initial thought is this is the water pump. Am I on the right track?

First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!!

Is that a 2003 Jetta petrol or diesel?

You need to get it pressure tested.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.
