1997 Jetta Secondary Air Pump
Hello. I am trying to address my girlfriend's Jetta check engine light cause by a secondary air pump code. I hooked up a multimeter to the electrical connector and did not get a reading. I could have sworn the day before when I hit the pump with a socket wrench it came on for a few seconds. I had never heard it come on before. Does this pump only run at certain times and thus that is why I was not getting an electrical reading on the multimeter? Maybe I will hook the meter up to the connector while revving the engine.
If there is not power to the connector I was wondering what would the most likely problem be?
Thanks ahead of time,
Dave

Thanks Keith. I don't have the code number, but when I asked the mechanic to write down what code it was giving, he wrote down the code was related to the secondary air injection. On another quote years ago it also indicates "secondary air pump" and a quote for $500.00.
I have no problem trying to find a used pump to get it working if it is the pump, but I am confused why no voltage reading from the connector on the wire harness. This will be the first time I have used a multimeter, but I did get a reading of the battery so I don't think I have the meter set wrong.
If the engine is running, is the secondary air pump always running?
Thanks,
Dave
