RE: obd1 or obd2
the obd outlet is where you plug a scan tool to access your On Board Diagnostics... the obd1 or obd2 may just be a different plug? i dunno, its usually located under the steering wheel somewhere maybe that would say obd1 or 2

RE: obd1 or obd2
every car sold in the us after I THINK 1998 is obd2 by law you will have to look up the exact date but i think that should help. if it was before that date( what ever it is ) just ask you dealer, thay will know.
EDIT: if you dont live in the us (i forgetmany people dont) im not much help as i can barly keep up with amarican laws. but agen your dealer should be able to help

RE: obd1 or obd2
1996 obd2
in fact any vw after 1994 is most likely to have a obd2 plug above cig lighter next to ash tray
or under dash on newer ones
smaller 2 pin plugs for earlyer systems white and black sometimes a tan one too
found under shifter boot

There are plenty of cheap EODB II scanners on the market, you need VAG-COM\VCDS.
