Default After run water pump problems

I have a 99 MKIV GTI GLX and the after run water pump is not functioning. I was wondering if anybody knew what problems this could cause for me and if it is dire enough to get it fixed right away. Also any informationfrom anyone who has done this themselves on how hard it was to do. Thanks.

there is a small electric pump that runs after you shut the car off to cool down the engine
mostly on v6 and vr6 engines and some early 16 valves

Jrailer is correct on the description. It is in a vr6 motor. It wasn't working when I bought the car and I was wondering if it could be causing me any other problems. So far with the cost of gas I really don't take it out and run it to hard. Thanks to both of you.

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered a repair manual so I can see how hard it is to replace. If its too bad I'll take it to a shop.
