Default 99 gti sputtering

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this issue...Have a 99 GTI 2.0 WEG (i think it's a WE?) engine. For some time now I have been having an issue where car would start slowing down as if it was out of gas then speed up "sputtering". fuel pump is fairly new, gas is high test & good, plugs new, wires good, air cleaner is K&N & clean...not the clutch, ox sensor changed prior to cat & aft. No codes pulled on computer either (using OBS2). I suspect the mass air flow sensor...However this part is a bit pricey & I am not sure it is bad, just a guess from what I have read. I removed it & ran car as someone suggested but car ran the same....This problem is serious now car barely runs w/o sputtering....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It could be a number of things. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? If you want you can clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner or you can use electronic cleaner as well. Is yours a 99 or a 99.5 (MKIII or MKIV)?
