170hp Golf wont start
I have a 2007 Mk5 170hp Golf that will not start .
Symptoms prior to this problem were the exhaust gas absolutely stank it was acrid and felt like it was burning your eyes, I put it into a garage last May who repoted that the valve timing was slightly out they put the valve timing right and there was a slightly better mpg and the exhaust gas was slightly less acrid but not cured.
Last sunday my wife hit a pothole (not her fault) and ruined a tyre and alloy wheel on the nearside front, I changed the wheel and put the car in the garage I dont know if this has anything to do with it but wondered if anything could have been damaged by the shock of hitting the hole.
We had a dentist's appointment the following day and found the car would not start but it did aoppear to be firing on one cylinder, called the AA he plugged his diagnostic machine in and found no faults recorded checked for diesel to the filter seemed to be ok tried everything he could think of to no avail, so now its in a garage they have checked the tank for cleanliness and eventually managed to get it going yesterday I phoned this morning to see if I could pick it up and they told me that it has refused to start again they seem to be puzzled as to what it is, he has phoned various specialists explained the symptoms including this foul exhaust smell (not like a catalytic converter) and they dont seem to know either.
Anyone able to offer any advice on what it could be.

Not an easy problem to solve on the web.
There are only three reasons a diesel engine won't start.
1. Mechanical malfunction, timing belt broken or not aligned correctly.
2. Insufficient fuel being injected in.
3. Insufficient heat to cause the fuel to ignite.
You say the AA man scanned it for error codes and found nothing.
Check all fuses.
I would still check the glow plug circuit to make sure that functions as it should. I do have VCDS to check other components.

Definitely sounds like me when my timing belt broke. Check with the dealer, the part should be pretty cheap OEM VW Parts - OEM Volkswagen Parts Online | VWPartsVortex.com
