Default V5 Timing problems?

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if you can help me. I have a T plate VW V5 Golf (150bhp). It was left standing for about 9 months on my drive. When I started to drive it again it didn't idle properly and would cut out as I approached junctions sometimes. Then one day it wouldn't start and didn't sound right when I was turning it over. I had it towed to an independent garage where they put it on the diagnostic machine and it came up speed sensor and camshaft sensor (I think). These were replaced and also a new coil pack fitted but still will not start. Another fella at the garage said the timings out on it. After looking on a few VW forums I'm starting to wonder if the chain has slipped or snapped as this seems to be a common problem after 100k on the V5s. Mine has done 110k. Is this the likely problem do you think guys? And if it is will the engine be damaged? How can I tell if I looked in the head myself? Thank you in advance.
