Default Starting From Warm Problem

Hi. I have a VW Golf, 1.6, 2002 model. I have a problem when starting from warm, it's like this -

1. Starting engine from cold (i.e. first thing in the morning) - no problem, starts instantly.
2. Starting engine from hot (i.e. travel somewhere, stop off for a couple of minutes) - no problem, starts instantly.
3. Starting engine from warm (i.e. travel somewhere, stop off for 20 or 30 minutes) - struggles to start. It tries to start, but will not fire up. After several attempts, it will cough and splutter a lot and will eventually fire up, with a lot of smelly fumes.

Anyone have an idea what the problem might be please.
Thanks!
