MK III headlight problem

Default MK III headlight problem
My 96 VR6 GTI headlights quit and then came back on after cycling the switch on and off several times. This happened again but the lights came on after the switch made what sounded like relay chatter. Is there an internal relay inside the headlight switch? Is this a common problem in the MKIII ?
