Default ECU problem?

I went to start my R and started right up no problems. Let it run for a little bit because it was a little chilly out, then it just shut off on me. I tryied to start it back up and would not start up it turns over but does not start. So today i hooked up my computer scanner to my R and says it has a communication error with my ECU and it has read my ECU fine in the past. So now I am stumpped as of what could be wrong? Can there be a problem with my ECU can they just die?

oh and i checked all fuses they are good and all lights in dash turn on as if it was fine.

Thanks
