Default Discs replacement

I'm just wondering how often, on average, the discs on a golf need replacing?

I've had a 1.6 the last four years (purchased new) and even though it's only done 36k miles, I had to have the front discs replaced at 24K and now the rear ones at the 36K mile service.

It's mainly just used as a general runaround and certainly never driven hard. I'd like to update it with a new diesel but am of the mind that this is slightly excessive and wonder whether its (a) normal (b) a weakness in Golfs or (3) the garage having a laugh.

cheers

disc brakes can wear differently, depending on temperature and stuff like that, warping from water splashing on hot rotors, i guess it all depends on how much they are used...

a micrometer can be used to measure thickness.... there are specs on minimal thickness that would be a good judge of when to replace them
