Default Bleeding brakes on 97 Golf

In the online manuals on Autozone.com, it says for bleeding the brakes, just keep pumping the pedal until it's firm and then you're done. Bull****. So before I bleed the brakes, I've heard that there are cars when you only have to bleed on side on the front, and one side on the front. Something about the axles running on the same lines, blah, blah. So on this Golf, Can I just bleed the one side, or do I have to bleed both sides of each end?
